Buzzcocks - Complete BBC Sessions 77-79 / Bootleg Download

 

The legacy of the Buzzcocks is one that is really hard to argue against. It is just amazing the way this band managed to influence punk in such a way that their sound and their inspiration can be heard in a lot of bands even to this day. To the eyes of many there is simply no doubt that their run from 1977 to 1979 was truly something else, the band was on fire, booking live gig after live gig, being incredibly active in studio, and ending up delivering some of the most enjoyable and energetic music at the time. Of course, despite the uniqueness of their legendary run, it is hard to say that it was all perfect, but there is at least a concensus regarding its high quality and, what's more important, their undeniable legacy and importance in the history of modern music. Sadly, the same statement can't be used when it comes to talking about the rest of their discography.

Yeah, the band is, and will always be, known for those early albums and singles, but they still have an oddly large discography that spans over the course of decades, a discography full of new music as well as plenty of archive material constantly unvaulted in order to be showcased to the public, everything of varying quality. One could quite literally spend hours talking about each and every one of these releases, bringing out their pros and cons, discussing their relevance, or simply being baffled at the next step that Shelley (may he RIP) and company chose to take for their newest project at the time, but most of that isn't relevant at the moment. However, there is one release that falls into this category that has always been a splinter in my thoughts regarding this band, and that would be the BBC Sessions album released in 1998. 

This album was very weird for many reasons. At that point the Buzzcocks were very active, having released an album in 1996 and preparing themselves to enter recording sessions for their upcoming 1999 album, ending up in a period that was very active for their live performances in promotion of all this new material. Of course, and in very expected "legendary English musical act with new music on the plate" action, radio presentations came to be, ending up in the Buzzcocks doing plenty of these sort of performances over the course of the 90s. Promotion for this release was very vague, the CD was relatively limited and most definitely addressed towards big fans more than anything, but the contents were still not very clear up until the release of the album. Reading something as "BBC Sessions" from a band like the Buzzcocks, which had very iconic BBC presentations during that golden 70s run, one would expect mostly this sort of archive material complemented with a few sparkles of the newer recordings. However, this was not the case. Only four (technically five) of the twenty (technically twenty one) tracks on the album were of their early days, with the rest of the material being presentations done from 1993 to 1997. Essentially, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, it technically is something that lives up to its name and description, but I guess it is something that had always bugged me in some irrational way, mainly because Buzzcocks live after the 80s has never fully clicked with me. There is no doubt that the band, with its different lineups, still tried to bring back the energy that had characterized the name for a long time, but it just was never the same. Strong instrumentals can't hit the same without strong vocals, and viceversa, and by that point Pete had just lost or gotten weaker regarding most of the qualities that made him unique as a vocalist and a frontman. It was evident that he was still trying, and there are still plenty of great little songs from the new music being written and performed at that period that one can listen to and enjoy, but as a whole the essence of Buzzcocks was almost an old memory drifting away (thankfully, it never really did, even during their last stretch of material in the mid 2010's, but you get the point).

I guess as a way to ease that splinter in my thoughts I come here to share the """proper""" BBC Sessions release, a bootleg compiling their radio performances from 1977 to 1979. They are not that great and honestly when I first stumbled upon them I ended up coming out underwhelmed in a very odd way (with the "disappointment" coming from unreasonable and made up personal expectations more than the actual quality of the recordings), but they are still a very important historical document that any Buzzcocks fan, or just any fan of punk history, should check out. There are still a lot of great moments to be appreciated from the bunch (the first two sets of Peel Session recordings being my absolute favorites of the whole thing), and as a whole it is what someone would really come to expect from a release titled "BBC Sessions" that has the Buzzcocks name attached to it. Fun, energetic, catchy, and just engaging from beginning to end, and NOT ending on an unnecessary silence just to reward the listener with a radio recording of What Do I Get from 1979 that is just odd because of its sourcing when everyone and their mother know full well that THAT particular recording has always been available in high quality. Oh well, what can you do.

At least Garvey's bass in Fast Cars will never NOT fuck insanely hard in ANY of its renditions.

Wobbler - Burg Herzberg Festival, Breitenbach am Herzberg, Germany, 29/07/2018 / Bootleg Download

 

The modern state that the world of progressive rock is currently in is most certainly a very curious one for various reasons. On the one hand prog is one of those genres that has gathered an aura of pretentiousness, one of those genres that is full to the brim with people that catalog the music as intellectual, as something that only the enlightened and smart folk would be able to truly enjoy, and full of musical acts that also seem to endorse that mindset in a lot of manners. And while this aspect of the community is very present, those statements could not be, of course, further from the truth, since that style of music isn't supposed to be enjoyed by just one type of individuals, and the amount of prog albums that are held as all-time classics in the history of rock music certainly prove that better than anything else. In the end, and as a huge prog fan myself, the only thing I would recommend more than anything else is to please further yourself as much as possible from the baffling snob-ish community in order to just explore and enjoy the music as much as possible. 

That being said, modern prog is a very interesting mixed bag regarding the musical aspects that are part of it. On the one hand you truly have acts that focus to live up to the name of the genre, "progressing" or innovating as much as they can in their own personal styles, having their own influences but not wearing them as an essential part of who they are, ending up in certainly outstanding records that captivate listeners in the best way possible. But for the most part you have the throwback acts that aim to mimic the classic acts from the 70's in all the ways possible, with the vast majority of these bands feeling uninspired, lazy, and just aimless with their work. Thankfully this is slowly starting to change more and more, and both new and old acts are starting to be more daring with their proposals, leading to the last few years in the world of prog music being very exciting and full of unique and worthwhile projects that give new life to this wonderful genre. However that is not to say that among this sea of acts imitating the classic style there weren't some groups or artists that did manage to do so on a remarkable way, bringing new life to what is old, executing ideas in the best way possible, not because they were just taking that classic style, but because they were doing so on a very unique way, grabbing from the best parts of their influences and giving birth to something completely new. And among those remarkable acts Wobbler stands as one of the most consistent and delightfully marvelous.

Wobbler don't have a relatively big discography, but for a band that has been going strong for more than two decades now, their five studio outputs make up for one of the strongest and most consistent offerings that one will be able to find in the world of modern prog. Using the same buzzwords and cliché comparisons you can make, because this is one of the few instances where those actually make sense, this band is just a jack of all trades when it comes to their influences and style of music. Chris Squire's influence in the bass, a perfect blend of Genesis and Gentle Giant's style of onstage/studio presence, ELP's elegance in the compositions but with the decency of knowing their limits in order to not overwhelm the listener by going that overboard, it all can be found on a discography full of wonderful tracks, powerful performances, and incredible musicianship. It really is a band that leaves one wondering how most of these songs would be translated to a live setting, and even though a live album from them would be an incredible offering it sadly isn't something that has taken place yet, but once again bootlegs are here to satisfy that need.

The band has had its fair share of bootlegs popping up throughout the years, but sadly none of these ended up being from a soundboard source, ending up with a lot of audience recordings of varying quality. But it's not all too bad, I've always been a big defender of audience tapes specially since a lot of my own personal favorite bootleg recordings were sourced from similar places, and there are some outstanding sets from Wobbler to take notice of being available by such means. What I share here today is one of their 2018 performances (the era that has the most bootleg recordings available for the public, and for very good reasons), my favorite one out of the bunch, since its the one with the most listenable and clean sound quality throughout the entire set, that took place during the 50th anniversary of the Burg Herzberg Festival in Germany. The festival as a whole was mostly a disappointment for most people attending it due to the huge mixed bag that were the main musical acts, but most articles and forum discussions on the matter agree that Wobbler immediately took the spotlight and almost made up for the rest of the experience. Hot right out of the release of their fourth album, "From Silence To Nowhere" (my absolute favorite out of their entire discography), one year prior, Wobbler were at full force, and this set accentuates that in the best ways. Starting off with two songs from their first album and then picking the highlights from both their new album and their previous effort "Rites At Dawn" (including both epics from the new album as well as offering wonderful extended renditions of In Orbit and specially This Past Presence), with the only lackluster aspect of this recording being the sound quality, which isn't bad, but the whole thing could benefit more from a direct soundboard source or a clearer audience tape. A close to two hour long set that ends up being mesmerizing, full of charm from the band members and their interactions with the audience, wonderfully executed, and full of remarkable musicianship that serves as further proof that Wobbler are one band that deserves all the love and recognition it gets.

But more than just a way of sharing a great set this is just a way to encourage anyone who is unaware of the band to just give them a try. They released another wonderful album in 2020 and a compilation of their first three albums in late 2021, which is certainly a more convenient way to listen to them I suppose. Supporting their bandcamp if you happen to end up liking their music would be just the best thing to do (or, you know, just fucking give them their money by buying From Silence to Nowhere, that is just a fully incredible album), seriously heavy recommendations from my part.

Osamu Sato - Linen Records Presents Osamu Sato Studio Live (February 2021 In Tokyo) / Bootleg Download

What can really be said about the one and only Osamu Sato without feeling the need to go in depth about all the range and quality of his work over these decades? Well I guess just re-state, even though it has never been stated in this very blog before, the fact that he is one of my personal favorite artists in the world of videogames, visual art, and electronic music. It has been that way for quite a long while now, I remember playing LSD Dream Emulator when I was really young and rather than being perplexed or mesmerized by the wonderful visuals and the miscellaneous nature of its experience I was just amazed with the music more than anything. It would take years before I found out that the man had a rather considerable discography behind him, and whats more, a very worthwhile one at that. 

But outside of magnificent works like Transmigration, The Esoteric Retina or the multiple LSD themed works, Sato also had a very mesmerizing collection of live/in studio performances, or sets to be more appropriate, to be found out there. Needless to say, as soon as I found most of those I just dived right into them as much as I could, but there were always some that were just the cream at the top. Live at Dommune and Live From The Studio 2020 just put Sato in full force on a modern context, the man just has a knack to create wild remixes and to fully elaborate an immersive experience in such fascinating ways through his sets that it all just helped to make me completely excited and enthusiastic about whatever the man came up with moving forward. 

It is safe to assume that the pandemic interrupted a lot of Sato's plans, but it is obvious he is doing his best regardless of the circumstances. Sure, he has been in the spotlight of his fandom for various reasons, most notably the fact that he got involved with NFT's, making a lot of long time fans suddenly want to disassociate with him completely, but in a personal aspect it didn't bother me one bit (sure, I don't support it, but at the same time it doesn't affect any of the previous experience I've had with the man's work, and I personally think that if something like that does have a huge effect on your perception of the ENTIRE work of an artist then there is something very weird about you, but alas). I still look forward to whatever the man has to deliver in the next few years, but until the time for official releases come we still have treats such as these ones to enjoy in all their glory (but I still wonder what on earth would an official DJ Mix CD/release from the man be like, or if there would ever be plans for one). 

This was a set Osamu did in early 2021 back in Linen Records in promotion of his Transformed Collection album from 2020, footage was recorded and uploaded in two parts on the man's youtube channel and what we have is something on a similar vein of the Studio 2020 set, but more fleshed out and better polished in some aspects. Some of the mixes are just lovely and very hypnotizing to listen to over and over again, and the set as a whole is just a blast, perfect to just put in the background and relax with. Regardless of what the man has done, there is no doubt in my mind that I am still excited and interested in whatever he decides to do next.

Tim Buckley - The Lion's Share 1970 & Felt Forum 1972 / Bootleg Download

 

I've always been more of a Jeff Buckley sort of individual due to various reasons, but mostly because of the larger amount of documented live and interview footage that exists of him in comparison to his own father. This not only allows one to experience a more sort of "personal" relationship with Jeff as an artist, but also to just appreciate him more as a person (with his artistic beliefs/passions and his beautiful perception of life), and also to just appreciate the musical evolution that was slowly, but surely, taking place, and that sadly got lost due to Jeff's tragic death at the age of 30 (with him strongly stating that the least he wanted was for everyone to stay fixated on Grace and how he truly wanted to deliver something that was completely of his own in his future albums, always passionate to play and always excited to the possibility of recording and performing more of his music). Of course, that is not to say that I don't have any sort of appreciation of Tim whatsoever (he was a remarkable artist and a huge influence on many of my own favorites) or that there are no documents of him that would allow anyone to make that sort of connection but they are certainly less abundant and more sporadic. 

It is a curious thing really. Tim has a lot more studio recordings than his son, and died at an earlier age as well, but there are curiously not that many bootleg live recordings or video interviews of him, and even the written/transcripted interviews that are available are relatively few and sometimes very far in between. Overall I'd say that Tim was way more inconsistent than Jeff, but after all, it is an unfair comparison to make between two artists that don't have almost anything in common outside of them sharing their last name and the fact that they both had an incredible talent with their voices and their musical abilities. Nevertheless, and being redundant for a bit, I still appreciate and admire a lot of what Tim has done in his lifetime, particularly between the stretch of late 1968 and late 1972.

Out of the relatively few Tim bootlegs that are available, most of them are recordings from 1967-Early 1968 and 1975, with the 60s ones being very enjoyable and remarkable at times but still showing him developing his own sound and the recordings before his passing showing him on his least interesting form, wearing off and getting full of the "Look at the Fool" style performances. By the time October 1968 became present, Buckley had started to show more consistent setlists and started to unveil a more intriguing and "experimental" sound, with this point in his career being perfectly encapsulated on the official "Dream Letter" live album. Songs were starting to become longer, full of jamming that was carried by the chemistry of the wonderful ensembles that Tim carried to the shows, and by 1969 he was just shining onstage, with documents like the masteful "Venice Mating Call" showing that in full splendor, with a powerful and compelling setlist that was starting to show hints of what would become his musical peak in the next few months. These following couple of years are not only among my favorite of his, but also the ones that are the least documented compared to the rest of his career. 

Before the release of "Greetings From LA" and during the craze that the wonderful "Starsailor" and "Lorca" brought with them, Tim was on full force with his live performances. The Starsailor ensemble was magnificent, and what Tim was available to accomplish even not long after their disolution was still remarkable in both his group and solo gigs. Sadly, there are not many outstanding documents from this period to truly showcase that on full force. Most of them are either incomplete, recorded like absolute shit, or both, which makes it even more of a pain to have hopes that one day a full soundboard recording will pop up blessed by the angels and God himself. But at least not everything is that bad. What I bring here are two recordings, sound quality very rough on both but at least the least garbage out of all the mountain of pain that are these unofficial documents, recordings listenable enough to make one truly appreciate, or at least get an idea, of what made these years so special. The Lion's Share gig is something to specially keep an eye out for, because even with that sound quality one can truly feel the magnificence that was the Starsailor quartet, playing material from both of those enormous 1970 albums in one tight setlist, with Buckley's voice on full splendor and a very relentless guitar playing, Balkin's powerful bass, Baker's tight drumming and Gardner's outstanding use of reeds and trumpet making up for one of the most intriguing recordings from Tim's career as a whole, which makes it even more of a shame that the sound quality itself feels like it was coming from a microphone hidden in a coat pocket. The Felt Forum 1972 recording is less energetic, but it is still a joy to listen to, it has a lot of what made the 1969 gigs special, even having a very interesting rendition of Gypsy Woman as the closer, but it definitely was aiming for something more calm and introspective, elements that would make up most of what made Greetings From LA special in its own way. 

Not excellent, not "a must" for any music fan, but these are definitely recommended for any Tim Buckley fan that appreciates the man's career as a whole. Just small oddities, treats if you will, that might have a lot to offer if you really give them the chance.

Katra Turana - 2015年12月29日に吉祥寺Star Pine's Cafe / Bootleg Download

 

Katra Turana's return to studio in 2022 was very much unexpected and surprising, but very much a thing that is to be welcomed with open arms for all of those who are fans of the always captivating and charming Japanese experimental/prog scene. Honestly it was a long time overdue, the band had been performing some gigs ever since they released their last proper studio album in 1986, alternating between supporting members and kind of hinting (?) at new material or newer versions of classic material from their catalog during those performances. Of course, and as it seems to be custom with Japanese acts performing at Japanese gigs, few of these performances were recorded and distributed on their entirety or at least on a sound quality that didn't make you want to blow your brains out as soon as possible. But at least some gems managed to slip by and bless us with their existence. 

This is a rather small set from 2015 performed at the legendary Star Pine's Cafe, nothing too fancy, nothing too full of itself either, just a very charming and digestible livestream that had great sound quality and that was made up by some of the most recognizable and memorable compositions from the band that were given some very nice treatment (sadly never released officially, but that's why we are here). It all ended up in some nice renditions, for the most part, that at times do manage to cross the line by becoming absolute outstanding highlights, indeed proving that this band still has plenty of steam left in the machinery to keep things going for a long while. In particular pay attention to the last few songs, in particular Tendon and The End, with all the band coming together in their calm progression and onstage chemistry, offering some great instrumental bits and also being the track where the vocals manage to work at their best. 

It is not really something outstanding or completely revolutionary, even for the Katra Turana formula, but it really is a nice small little thing to sit through and enjoy. Really wonderful atmosphere and the instrumentals really deliver in the end, so it really is nice. Honestly feel that this is a wonderful complementary piece of their new Reboot album, which is pretty close to what was described here. Basically re-recordings of their material with some modern lineup and modern equipment to aid in all, ending up in a record that justifies its length and does so on a great way, definitely being a pleasant listen for fans or appreciators of the band's legacy as a whole.

(Also a side-note, but it really was a huge surprise seeing it released digitally and distributed physically by Telegraph in such a remarkable surprise since most people who followed it thought they had become sort of a living corpse years ago, and also by the Inundow label, which honestly has been on fire with a streak of wonderful releases over these last few years, in particular in 2022 with the absolutely outstanding Gerogerigegege project ">(decrescendo) Final Chapter", so this is definitely a label to keep looking forward to in the upcoming months.)
