More than a year ago, and after sharing a RAdIO recording from the 2000s, I promised that a lot of Shibusashirazu and Daisuke Fuwa material would end up coming along, and even though it has been more than a couple of months, I did end up getting ahold of quite the collection of live material from the wonderful world of Daisuke Fuwa.
I think it is safe to say that, regardless of what one might personally think about the quality or style of the music, Shibusashirazu is by far one of the most unique bands to have ever existed in the zeitgeist of Fusion, Big Band, Japanese Jazz or just Jazz bands in general. Their style is explosive, ever expansive, with a huge blend of influences and tributes and improvisation in their run, and it has all been commanded and controlled by the same visionary conductor and mastermind for more than 30 years now: Daisuke Fuwa. Shibuboshi was one of the first """Jazz""" albums I ever felt enamored or mesmerized by, being one of those special recordings that falls in the weirdly specific, yet fascinating and accurate, category of "Jazz related albums that a progressive rock fan would 100% enjoy without a shadow of a doubt (with other such recordings being Miles Davis' Get Up With It and Return to Forever's Light as a Feather)". And every couple of years, for more than a decade now, with every single relistening experience, I just can't help but to be more and more mesmerized by it. Just like Pat Metheny, Miles Davis, Otomo Yoshihide and John Zorn, it was a huge catalyst for me to expand my personal taste and range of reference in the amazing world of Jazz. It was my introduction to Naadam (which would slowly, and especially in the last couple of years, end up becoming one of my all time favorite standards in general) and Eiichi Hayashi, to Kazuhisa Uchihashi and all his related projects leading me to Tatsuya Yoshida, to Sun Ra and his incredible catalog, to Marshall Allen and his work with Alan Silva, among many other things that came with the projects that involved all the members in such a brutal lineup.
It was a given, giving (hah, get it?) how much I adore diving into the work of things that have impacted me in different ways, that I would end up listening as much as possible coming from them. Daisuke Fuwa is a tremendously intriguing figure, with a wide evolution of his craft and his approach to music, which meant only that such rich body of work would give light to an extensive catalog of live documents of all different eras and lineups. After listening to Shibuboshi it was only natural that I would end up checking out what was available to me at the time when it came to live recordings, which their discography provides in a nice way. However, there is only so much you can handle when fitting what are usually two or three hour long sets into a single CD, so regardless if albums like Shibusai and Lost Direction ended up being great introductions to what the band was able to provide in a live setting, it always felt incomplete, and I sure wasn't wrong about that.
Diving into their body of live recordings available online, there is just so much to listen to, to marvel upon and to just get impressed by. Regardless if their studio output is interesting and well put together for the most part, Daisuke Fuwa and Shibusashirazu live, breathe, expand and come to full force through their live performances and ensembles. It is all theatrical, bombastic, very explosive in the exploration of sounds and influences, and without limitations of length or condensations of ideas they are able to stretch performances to places where the songs end up becoming a parade of fun interactions and sounds or just the highest of highs regarding what every single member is able to give with their performances, their experiences and their talent. What I bring here are 50 bootleg recordings, more than 4 days worth of material, spanning from 1999 to 2015, and allowing fans or people interested to just gaze and marvel at the evolution or change of focus of the sound and style. It is just something to dive into and get lost in, with such wonderful sounds being available here, and showcasing some of the purest, most dedicated and passionate performances ever put on a stage.
Shibusashirazu and Daisuke Fuwa stand the test of time for me as some of the most timeless and incredible things to have ever come out of the vast world of music, and I can only expect that people that decide to give a chance to these recordings have an incredible enjoyment and fascination towards what went on in those stages, with those performers and ensembles. There is just so much music to be soaked into out there, to be marvelled and entertained by, and that will always be one of the main things that make life such a beautiful thing to experience.
I hope you guys enjoy this as much as possible!
